if you have btrfs or XFS it will image those sector by sector too. it's a windows carry over since I multi-boot but it works perfectly for GPT and Standard Partitioning ext4 layouts (i've not tried LVM). I've used acronis true image for years without any problems.

The only thing I'd change is using lz4 instead if gzip. Personally I never found much value in disk cloning tools since the command line is so easy. gdisk,fdisk are strictly about manipulating partition tables and not copying anything. Gparted has features that allow it to COPY a partition (I'm pretty sure it's only from block device to block device), but it won't compress, save to a file-system or send it across a network. Frankly since partimage can't handle ext4 or btrfs I would consider it unusable on linux generally. Partimage is about copying partition images (generally compressed) to files within a file-system. Yes gparted, gdisk, and more recently fdisk can use GUID tables - but none of them replicate the features of partimage.

Can I do that with gdisk?I think you may be suffering from some miscommunication here. Thanks! I have been using partimage to create an image of a whole partitions for backup and to restore to the same partition or to a different partition.
